Not Just Honesty
Truthfully, the first time I heard the word Integrity, I could not tell the difference between it and honesty. Both involve telling the truth. Both deal with right and wrong. Both are crucial qualities of a leader. Both end in y. The list goes on and on. But in reality, integrity requires much more from a person than simple honesty.
Honesty is a fantastic character quality to have, and is a crucial skill needed to achieve Black Belt Excellence. In fact, it is a basic building block for achieving any kind of true success. But when it comes down to it, honesty is simply telling the truth rather than a lie. Integrity is much more than that. It is a lifestyle, and not one that is easily abided by. It is doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching.
This means living your entire life as if someone is watching you closely. Honesty can mean that if you do the wrong thing, you own up to it and tell the truth. But having integrity can stop you from making a mistake before it happens. You can’t spend your entire life being honest just to clean up your messes and mistakes-but you can live your life with integrity, and do the right thing the first time.
Someone who lives with integrity is able to adopt any other character quality required to achieve Black Belt Excellence. Honesty, Self Control, Self Discipline, Respect, Perseverance- these all come easily to someone with Black Belt integrity.
