As a Warrior, one must be constantly improving and building their character as well as their physical abilities. Just as someone in the Martial Arts might choose a specific technique and drill it over and over again until it is perfect, even creating new ways to practice and train that technique, I believe that a true Warrior must find a specific character quality that they know they need to work on, and practice it until it is an inseparable part of their personality. For me, it is very fortunate that our word of the month is Self-Reliance, because that is the Warrior quality that I have been personally working to strengthen lately!
I just recently began a new segment of my life as I moved out from my parents’ house, and with that comes a lot of new responsibilities. Fortunately, my parents always taught me to learn how to do things for myself, and so I was in many ways prepared for life on my own. But there are still many things that I am learning. One of my personal goals to develop self-reliance is to fill a three-ring binder with information that I could need in the future. I write down whatever is useful, from tasks I have figured out how to do, like fixing something around the house, to lessons I have learned from teachers and mentors. When you write something down, it tends to stick in your head so that you will remember it in the future. Everyone took notes in school to study for tests, but why doesn’t anyone write down what the skills and lessons that they learn in life? Don’t these lessons have much more value?
A huge part of being Self-Reliant is being informed. Anymore, there really is no excuse for not knowing how to do something yourself. Not only are there many people you could simply ask, but we have access to the internet, where you can find just about anything. Whether you choose to write these things down or not is up to you; I do it simply so that I will remember it in the future. But it is the responsibility of every man and woman to be well-informed about the things that could come up every day. If you are serious about becoming Self Reliant, spend some time to examine what it is that you need to know how to do!
